JOINING CLUBS, SOCIETIES, AND CLASSES

In Belgium, they say that if three people come together in one place with a common interest or belief, they will form a society. There is an organized group for practically any activity you can mention. In Flanders alone, more than half the population are active members of at least one club or society. Even young adults with a full-time job and small children somehow manage to squeeze in several evenings a week to study the guitar, sing, act, play squash or football, learn a new language, practice salsa dancing, make pottery, or go to a political, environmental, or other interest group. So, if you’re a “joiner” at heart, there are plenty of outlets for your sociability and opportunities to meet like-minded Belgians. You will need to be fairly proficient in French or Dutch, though, to take part fully, unless you join a club for expatriates—which would defeat the object of meeting Belgians.
